Giannis Wins NBA All-Star MVP

Giannis Antetokounmpo was the biggest star amongst stars last night during the 2021 NBA All-Star Game in Atlanta. Team Lebron defeated Team Durant 170 – 150 led by the reigning back to back MVP. Giannis becomes the second recipient of the honorary Kobe Bryant NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player award.

Nigeria Undefeated In FIBA Afrobasket 2021 Qualifiers

The Nigeria Men National Team continues to showcase their dominance with today’s win over Mali 76-56 in the final match of the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Qualifiers. Nigeria went 6-0 during the Qualifiers by an average winning margin of seventeen points per game. Nigeria will be the favorites heading into the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Championship taking place later this year in Kigali, Rwanda.

Adewale Ogunleye Talks About Financial Literacy

Former NFL star Adewale Ogunleye joins the I Am Athlete crew to discuss financial literacy and what players should do with their money in the latest episode. I thought this was a great conversation amongst these former players that can apply to everyone not just athletes. Last year, Ogunleye was announced as UBS Global Wealth Management Head of Sports & Entertainment with the goal to offer financial advice to athletes and entertainers.

USMAN UFC 258 TKO

Kamaru Usman is still the CHAMP. Put some RESPECT on his name. Usman defeated Gilbert Burns in the third round of UFC 258 on Saturday night with a TKO to retain the UFC Welterweight Championship. After taking a big blow in the first round, Usman dominated the rest match leading to the knockout. Usman is currently on a 13 match winning streak which ties for the second longest win streak in UFC history.

Nigeria Takes Over 2020 NBA Draft

The Cleveland Cavaliers select Isaac Okoro with the #5 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Back to Back MVPs for Giannis

Giannis Antetokounmpo was named the 2019-2020 NBA Most Valuable Player for the second straight regular season.  Giannis led the Milwaukee Bucks to the best record in the league with a record of 56-17. He continues to put up great numbers on a yearly basis with averages 29.5 PPG (5th in the league), 13.6 RPG (2nd in the league), 5.6 APG, and a league leading 31.94 PER. 

As I mentioned previously, Giannis joins Michael Jordan (1987-1988) and fellow Nigerian Hakeem Olajuwon  (1993-1994) as the only players to win MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. Giannis received 85 out of 101 first place votes from a total of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters.

Bam’s Game Winning Block

Bam Adebayo had one of the greatest blocks in NBA history last night to give the Miami Heat the victory over Boston Celtics during Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals. This played showed why Bam was on the the NBA All-Defensive Second Team.

Arike Scores Career High 39 Points In Win

Arike Ogunbowale scored a career high 39 points last night (12/24 FG, 4-6 3PT, 11-12 FT) leading the Dallas Wing to a 101-94 win over the Washington Mystics. This included the game tying 3-pointer that Arike made in the 4th quarter sending the game into OT. We all know from her collegiate days that Arike is one of the clutchest players in the league. There was no surprise when that shot went down. Arike is the current leading scorer in the WNBA averaging 22.2 PPG.
