One of the underrated news stories this month was the announcement that Brooklyn Nets star guard Spencer Dinwiddie is attempting to play for the Nigeria National Team in the upcoming Olympics in 2021. According to reports, Dinwiddie is acquiring a Nigerian passport to play for the D’Tigers. Dinwiddie did not get an invite to play for Team USA Olympic team, so he began to look for other options to make an Olympic appearance. Dinwiddle would be joining the Nigeria team as a naturalized player similar to Serge Ibaka playing for Spain during the 2012 Olympics.
If Dinwiddie can secure a spot on the Nigerian squad he would provide both an instant stability in the backcourt and an offensive boost as well. Before the NBA season was suspended due to global pandemic, Dinwiddie was averaging a career high in points and assists with 20.6 PPG & 6.8 APG. In case you are unfamiliar, the six year NBA veteran guard gets buckets so I’m definitely excited to see Dinwiddle wear the Green and White for the D’Tigers next year.
As we wait to see when how things align with the upcoming Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2021, it will be interesting to see how Dinwiddle’s decision impacts other stars to potentially play for Team Nigeria. In other stars I’m talking about Giannis Antetokounmpo, Victor Oladipo, and Bam Adebayo. Hopefully, these guys take a serious consideration into joining the team, but only time will tell.
