On Tuesday 8/25, Giannis Antetokounmpo was named the 2019-2020 NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Giannis led the Milwaukee Bucks to the best record in the NBA and their defense played a major factor. The Bucks held opponents to a league’s low in field goal percentage at 41.4% and Giannis was the captain of that defense.
Giannis received 75 first place votes from a panel of 100 sportswriter and broadcasters earning 432 points total. He can guard all five positions on the court. He has no issues when he has to switch against a quicker guard and he can hold his own versus the big guys as well. Players always have to be alert that Giannis is coming from behind with the chase down block. With his size, length, and athleticism Giannis is the ultimate force on the defensive end. Check out some of his highlights below:
In the process of winning the Defensive Player of the Year award, Giannis has earned some additional recognition to add to his future Hall of Fame resume. Giannis is the first player in NBA history to win the Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player, & Defensive Player of the Year awards. Giannis is the fifth player to win both the NBA MVP and NBA DPOY in a career (joining Hakeem Olajuwon, Michael Jordan, Kevin Garnett, & David Robinson). Will Giannis also win the MVP again to join another elite group (winning both MVP & DPOY in the same season)? Stay tuned!
